New year, new skills: How to master being a chef in 2025
As we kick off 2025, it’s the perfect time to level up your chef skills and make sure you’re at the top of your game.
Whether you're just starting out in the kitchen, aiming for a more well-rounded role, or looking to step into kitchen leadership, staying consistent is key. Here’s how you can master being a chef this year by focusing on these essential skills:
1. Communication
Communication is always key in any role, but within the hustle and bustle of a busy kitchen, it's more important than ever.
Not only do you need to master effective communication on shift to get the job done, but there’s also more strategic communication in team meetings and planning for busy shifts (anyone for Christmas 2025? Too early?!).
2. Teamwork
Teamwork is essential for a successful kitchen shift. Whether it’s the kitchen assistant providing a constant stream of clean pots and pans, the main line chef ensuring the ingredients are ready at the same time to be dished up together, or the head chef overseeing the main service, everyone’s role is crucial for a smooth operation.
3. Presentation
It's often said that you eat with your eyes, so the visual impact of the dishes you create is just as important as their quality.
Key presentation skills include attention to detail and a consistent approach, making sure every dish that leaves the kitchen looks exactly as it should. A well-presented dish showcases your professionalism and commitment to providing excellent guest experiences.
4. Problem solving
There’s no exact science to working in a kitchen, and sometimes things go wrong. We’re all human, after all.
While mistakes shape your learning, the important aspect is how you solve the problem! First things first: stay calm.
Staying calm helps you think clearly about what to do next. Also, consider the bigger picture. It may not be something to address immediately, but take some time to figure out the cause of the problem and how to prevent it from happening again.
5. Adaptability
Roles in a kitchen shift seamlessly from one moment to the next. One moment you may need to concentrate on getting clean pots to the mainline, and the next you’re prepping the dessert station.
The pace of the kitchen can also switch up quickly. It may be a steady morning of preparing veggies while singing along to the radio, followed by a busy lunch service where you haven’t noticed what song is playing!
Being able to adapt from one moment to the next is an important skill that will help you always be ready to be your best in any kitchen.
6. Leadership
Even if you’re not in a leadership position, leadership skills are still important. Coaching and influencing are key to getting the job done efficiently.
You might have an idea for improving a process—perhaps how the fridges are organised—and utilising these skills will help immensely. It’s also about creating a positive and supportive environment for everyone, and you don’t need to be in a leadership role to do this!
