3 resolutions that will help you land a job in the new year
The New Year is the perfect time to set some resolutions. Why? Because with Christmas behind you, it's easy to fall into a new year slump and ask yourself if you're in the right job. Setting some good intentions for the year ahead will give a huge boost to your motivation levels and could even result in finding your dream job.
According to YouGov, around one in three people who make New Year's resolutions stick to them. Now, that might seem a little low, but the same survey found that about one in two people keeps at least one resolution. So what have you got to lose? Set some intentions for the New Year, and you might look back in a year and thank yourself.
To help you get started, we've put together our top three resolutions that could help you land a job next year.
Resolution 1: Have an open mind
Maybe you come from a retail background and spot a pub job that you think would be fun, but you're not sure if you've got the right transferable skills. Or, you might see a kitchen job crop up at your local restaurant and think it could be a great way of meeting new people and learning new skills, but you've never set foot in a commercial kitchen.
Either way, make sure you keep an open mind. Don't close yourself off to roles you like the sound of just because you think you might not be right for the job. Explore every opportunity that catches your eye because you never know until you throw yourself into it.
Resolution 2: Find a brand that resonates with you
That doesn't mean you should go around applying for every job willy-nilly. Oh no. You want to land a job that gives you everything you need. Start by asking yourself what type of company you want to work for. Do you want to be recognised and rewarded? Are you looking for a company that's dedicated to creating an inclusive culture? Maybe you want to work in a team that will push you to be your best but also knows how to have a laugh.
Let's not forget that every company has their own culture and priorities. Take M&B, for example. With 13 distinct brands, like All Bar One, Harvester and Premium Country Pubs, a kitchen job could look different from one place to the next. In fact, we asked kitchen managers across the wider company what makes their brand different, and their answers certainly changed from one person to the next.
Resolution 3: Think two steps ahead
If you're going to stick to just one resolution next year, make sure it's this one. Don't think about the next role. Imagine yourself in the one after that. What's the first thing that springs to mind? If you can't picture it straight away, don't worry. Make it your goal to decide what that second step is. And if you have got that future role in sight - maybe, you've recently started a restaurant job, and think you'd be a great assistant manager - start thinking about how you'll get there. What is the step between your current role and your future one?
Find your next job with M&B!
So there you have it, three resolutions that we believe will help you find a job you truly want. And did you know if you write your intentions down, you're more likely to stick to them? If you're set on finding a new job, grab your notepad or open a new note on your phone, and get writing.
Maybe, you've worked through this list in your head, you've had that lightbulb moment, and know what job you want to apply for. If so, we might be able to help. As well as having many different brands we also have a mixture of roles, from kitchen assistants to head chefs and waiting staff to general managers. Take a look at the variety of roles at M&B, and that next career move might just become clear.
