From Kitchen Assistant to Head Chef: The hospitality career paths you should know about

Posting date: 13/05/2025

Think a kitchen job is just a way to earn a bit of cash? Think again. Hospitality is packed with career opportunities that can take you from chopping veg to calling the shots, and yes, we’re talking Head Chef careers.

Are you looking to start out or already rocking a chef hat? Whatever the case, there’s a path for you in the kitchen.

And the best bit? You don’t need loads of experience to get going, just a love for good food, teamwork, and learning as you go.

So, if you've ever wondered what’s next after Kitchen Assistant or how far your chef whites could really take you, let’s break down the journey, one tasty step at a time.

Starting out: Kitchen Assistant jobs

Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and for loads of people in hospitality, that first step is as a Kitchen Assistant. It’s hands-on, it’s fast-paced, and it’s the best way to learn the ropes.

You’ll be helping the chefs, prepping ingredients, keeping things tidy, and making sure the kitchen runs like clockwork. No pressure, right?

But here’s the thing: this role sets the foundation. You’ll pick up kitchen know-how, get used to working as part of a team, and start to understand what makes a smooth (and seriously tasty) service.

If you’ve got the energy, a good attitude, and aren’t afraid to get stuck in, this is your golden ticket into the world of cooking.

Building momentum: Chef jobs

This is where the kitchen really starts to feel like home. As a Chef, you’re right in the thick of it, prepping, cooking, plating, and keeping standards spot on every single time.

You know the menu inside out, and you’ve got the skills to keep things running like a well-oiled machine, even on the busiest of shifts.

It’s the perfect role if you’re confident with the tools and ready to take on more responsibility.

You’ll be trusted to deliver great food, support newer team members, and keep the quality high from the first dish to the last. It’s all about consistency, teamwork, and bringing the energy, even when the tickets are piling up.

Stepping up: Kitchen Team Lead jobs

Once you’ve nailed the basics, it’s time to level up, and that’s where the Kitchen Team Lead role comes in.

You’re still doing the hands-on stuff, but now you’re also the go-to person for keeping the kitchen crew on track. Think of it as being the calm in the chaos (or at least trying to be when the tickets are flying in).

You’ll be helping to run shifts, supporting new team members, and making sure everything’s ticking along nicely behind the scenes.

It’s a great role if you’re naturally organised, love working with people, and enjoy being the one who holds it all together when things get busy. Spoiler: they always get busy, but that’s part of the fun.

Getting stuck in: Sous Chef jobs

Ready to take things up a notch? As a Sous Chef, you’ll be leading the line, supporting the Head Chef, and making sure everything’s prepped and plated just right because consistency is key when you’re crafting the best experiences for our guests.

If you love a fast-paced kitchen and know how to keep cool when the heat’s on, this one’s for you.

Leading the way: Head Chef jobs

You’ve climbed the ladder and now you’re running the show. As Head Chef, you’re the boss of the back-of-house.

You’re managing the team, keeping service sharp, making sure every dish meets the mark, and handling all the behind-the-scenes stuff like stock, rotas, and health & safety. You’re the heartbeat of the kitchen.

With set menus to deliver, the focus is on top-tier execution and keeping things smooth and efficient.

You’ll be leading by example, keeping morale high, and making sure the team feels supported through every rush. It’s a big role, but if you’ve got the experience, drive, and leadership skills, it’s also seriously rewarding.

Ready to start your kitchen journey?

From your first dish to leading a full kitchen team, there’s a whole career waiting for you behind those double doors, and it all starts with that first step. At M&B, you’ll get the training, support, and real on-the-job experience to level up fast (and have a laugh while you’re at it).

Part-time chef jobs at M&B are also a great way to get started, with flexible hours, hands-on learning, and a chance to grow at your own pace.
