Why you should consider a career in hospitality
Many people think of a job in hospitality as a short-term gig, something to earn a bit of cash around other commitments. And sure, that’s true! But a career in hospitality is so much more than that.
It’s flexible, fast-paced, and packed with opportunities to develop skills, take on responsibility, and grow as a leader.
Just ask David, General Manager at The Crabtree in Hemel Hempstead, who has climbed the ranks at M&B and now champions the endless possibilities of careers in hospitality.
How to pursue a successful career in hospitality
David’s journey shows that your first role doesn’t define your whole career.
‘I first joined M&B because of the opportunities and job security a big company offers. It’s actually my third time back, and it really does feel like coming home. We’re a company that invests in people, brands, and technology to make managers’ lives easier.’
From Assistant Manager roles at Premium Country Pubs to supporting distressed sites at Ember Inns as GMD, David has taken on every challenge with determination and curiosity.
In February 2023, he was appointed GM at his current site, proving that hospitality careers can take you from kitchen floor to leadership in a way few other industries can.
Why a career in hospitality is more than a job
‘Too often, people dismiss hospitality as a filler job while you’re at university or waiting for your “real” career. But working in hospitality gives you skills you won’t get anywhere else.
You manage multi-million-pound businesses, oversee recruitment, develop talent, lead projects, and learn real-world leadership. Along the way, you’ll make lifelong friends who help you grow both personally and professionally.’
The biggest benefits of a career in hospitality
Flexibility is one of the biggest perks, with varied hours, you can find a role that fits your life. Hospitality is also one of the largest employment sectors in the UK, and we’re always looking for fresh talent, even if you have no prior experience.
Training and development are another huge bonus. Through apprenticeships and tailored learning programs, you can gain qualifications, develop your skills, and grow into leadership roles, all while doing a job that’s fun, social, and rewarding.
How M&B’s brands create career opportunities
With a wide range of brands, there’s a role for everyone. Whether it’s the comforting roast experience at Toby Carvery, the community-focused vibe at Ember Inns, or the premium offering of PCP, M&B gives you space to find your passion and progress.
David’s early career in the Premium Division and current leadership in the Pubs Division shows that it’s possible to grow across brands, take on new challenges, and step up into exciting leadership roles.
