From Graduate to Area Manager: Grace’s story
For Grace Mulholland, the transition from a law degree to becoming an Area Manager at Stonehouse, a brand within Mitchells & Butlers (M&B), is a testament to the diverse opportunities available within the hospitality industry. Her story is one of passion, adaptability, and the supportive environment provided by M&B's graduate scheme.
Discovering the path to an Area Manager job
Grace’s journey began at the University of Southampton, where she pursued a law degree however, realised early on that law wasn't her true calling. "It didn't have enough kind of a human element to it. It was a bit too book heavy," Grace reflects.
Her love for hospitality, sparked during her time working at Miller and Carter, guided her to explore alternative career options. It was her manager who suggested looking into M&B's graduate scheme.
How the Graduate Scheme prepares you for an Area Manager role
The M&B graduate scheme stood out to Grace for several reasons, primarily its focus on people management and personal growth.
"This job is about managing people, and that's what was represented in the grad scheme," she shares.
The scheme’s thorough yet supportive selection process, which includes video interviews, assessment days, and competency-based interviews, is designed to identify candidates with the right behaviours and potential, rather than just experience.
Gaining the skills for your future Area Manager career
One of the most appealing aspects of M&B’s graduate scheme is the variety of experiences it offers. Grace’s initial placement was at one of the Premium Country Pubs in Birmingham, where she underwent assistant manager and general manager training.
She then transitioned to roles in operational practice management, marketing, and strategic planning. Each position provided her with a good understanding of the different functions within the company.
"I got the chance to work alongside some amazing people who are a really important part of my network now," Grace recalls. The exposure to various roles not only broadened her skillset but also helped her build a professional network.
A supportive and dynamic work environment
What truly sets M&B apart as an employer is its dynamic and supportive work environment. Grace highlights the variety in her daily routine, which ranges from business reviews to kitchen due diligence, ensuring no two days are the same.
"Every day is varied. If you are looking for something where you're not waking up on a Monday and knowing that each day I'm going to be doing the same thing, this is definitely the right job for you," she enthuses.
Moreover, M&B’s diverse range of brands and its continuous growth create a stimulating and exciting workplace. The company’s commitment to personal and professional development is evident in its approach to training and mentorship.
Grace credits her success to the guidance she received from experienced colleagues and mentors, who played a crucial role in her development. Grace appreciates the company’s extensive employee benefits, including great discounts and the opportunity to experience different hospitality settings, from casual pubs to premium dining.
Looking ahead: Your future as an Area Manager
In an Area Manager job, Grace's immediate goal is to deliver consecutive green scorecards and continue her professional growth. Her long-term aspiration is to advance to an Operations Manager role. "The scheme has perfectly prepared me for that. My network is huge. I know all the right people who can help me deliver those results," she asserts.
Grace’s journey from a law graduate to a successful Area Manager at M&B is an inspiring example of how passion, resilience, and a supportive work environment can lead to a fulfilling career. For those considering a similar path, her advice is clear: be open-minded, build relationships, and remain passionate about your industry. With M&B offering such comprehensive support and development opportunities, the possibilities are endless.
