What is Yorkshire Day and when is Yorkshire Day?

Yorkshire Day is an annual celebration dedicated to the historic county of Yorkshire in England. It takes place on August 1st and was first celebrated in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society to promote the county's cultural heritage and raise awareness about its traditions, history, and contributions.

The date, August 1st, was chosen to commemorate the Battle of Minden in 1759 and the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, both of which have significant connections to Yorkshire regiments and figures.

As we celebrate Yorkshire Day on 1st August, it's a perfect time to explore the rewarding opportunities that a career in hospitality within this stunning county offers. Yorkshire, known for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich history, is also home to a dynamic hospitality industry.

Here, we share insights from Erin, an Assistant Manager and Dan, an Area Manager, who have built their careers in Yorkshire's hospitality sector.

The Journey of Erin

Erin began her career in hospitality in a Premium Country Pub in Pool-in-Wharfedale, in between Leeds and Harrogate, in 2016. Starting as a Team Member, she quickly climbed the ranks to become an Assistant Manager. Her career path took her to work in different restaurants in the brand, across various locations, including Birmingham and Sheffield.

Erin’s story highlights the flexibility and mobility within the hospitality industry. Despite taking a break to focus on motherhood, Erin is now eager to advance further, demonstrating that the hospitality roles accommodate personal growth and work-life balance

Reflecting on her career, Erin shares, “I love working in Yorkshire because of the incredible sense of community here. The people are warm and welcoming, and there’s a real pride in providing excellent service. It makes every day enjoyable and rewarding.”

Dan's Passion for Yorkshire

Dan's love for Yorkshire and his commitment to the hospitality industry shine through his career journey. Having worked in various managerial roles across different regions, Dan realized his heart belonged in Yorkshire, the place he was born. The vibrant cities, scenic countryside, and welcoming people make Yorkshire an irresistible place for hospitality professionals.

Dan started his career as an hourly Team Member in an All Bar One in Central London, quickly developing into a General Manager of one of our busiest bars – All Bar One Leicester Square. After developing this business to achieve record sales, Dan developed into an Area Manager role, working over various Vintage Inns districts, before joining Miller & Carter in 2016. He now overviews several Yorkshire restaurants and takes pride from having businesses in some of the most prominent places in Yorkshire, including the newly opened Miller & Carter York, a stones throw away from the historic York Minster.

Dan emphasizes the unique charm of Yorkshire’s hospitality scene, which he believes makes Miller & Carter stand out due to its premium offerings. The local guests appreciate the quality and authenticity of the experiences provided, making Yorkshire a delightful place to work in hospitality.

Dan expresses his attachment to the region, saying, “What I love about Yorkshire is the diversity of experiences it offers. From bustling cities like Leeds to the amazing Yorkshire countryside, there’s something for everyone. The people here are genuine and friendly, which makes working in hospitality a pleasure. It feels like home to me far more than anywhere else I've lived.”

Why Choose a Career in Hospitality in Yorkshire?

  1. Diverse Opportunities: Yorkshire's hospitality industry is diverse, ranging from quaint countryside inns to bustling city bars. This variety ensures that there are roles to suit every interest and skill level, whether you are starting as a team member, chef or aiming for a managerial position.
