How a part time Assistant Manager role has offered Mary a better work life balance
Are you searching for a job that you can fit around other commitments in your life? If your answer is yes, then you are not alone. In a recent survey, four out of five British workers expressed a desire to work flexibly in the future.
At M&B the diversity of roles across our many brands enables us to offer our team members a range of flexible job opportunities. And such part time opportunities are now growing at management level!
Assistant Manager Mary has worked her way up through M&B and following the birth of her son she now works as a part time Assistant Manager, which allows her a positive work life balance.
In this blog we spoke to Mary to find out more about what the benefits of working as a part time Assistant Manager are.
When did you join M&B and why?

When did you join M&B and why?
I have been with Harvester since November 2014 and had a year and a half off to have my little boy and came back February 2019. I was referred by a friend when I first started back in 2014, I had been working locally beforehand and was looking for a job where I could progress in hospitality and when I had my interview, I knew that this was the perfect place to progress my career.
What has your career at M&B looked like?
I started as Front of house waitress and progressed to shift supervisor, when I came back I came back as a part time waitress and worked around my partners work for a couple years which was great for me to still be a full time mother. I then progressed within 2 years to supervisor when my son went to school and my days opened back up and I was able to do more hours. At the start of this year I was offered Assistant Manager and I jumped at the chance to build my career even more.
What are the benefits of being a part time Assistant Manager?
The benefits for me are very personal, I am able to fit in some school pickups and drop offs. I still get time as a family with my partner and my son. I also feel more confident in myself now and that comes from being Mary and not Mum all the time. Harvester is also a favourite for dinner in our family so team discount is a bonus too.
What is your favourite thing about your role?
I like that I now have more responsibility and being able to help my General Manager when she needs me too. I also like that we have a really good mix of team and I enjoy being able to help them in any way I can.
How has M&B encouraged you to develop?
I feel I had a really good management team backing me with my progression. I do not feel pushed to progress too quickly and I feel I’m able to do it at my own speed. The support from my General Manager (GM) and Area Manager has been instrumental to my development. I couldn’t have done any of this without my GM Chelsea who has been the best support to me.
What advice do you have for our reader?
If you want a career where you can keep going in an upward trajectory but also still have that family balance, a pert time Assistant Manager role is definitely the best position to look for.
