Meet Lynn Lyness: our longest serving employee of 50 years!
Do you remember when M&B was simply a brewery? Well, there is one person who does and that is our longest serving employee Lynn Lyness, who this month, will be celebrating her 50-year anniversary working for us!
Currently working in Property as a Building Maintenance Controller, Lynn has had a very full and colourful career, seeing the company grow from a just a brewery to one of the largest restaurant and pub organisations in the UK.
In a recent interview we took a deep dive into Lynn's impressive career to discover what has made M&B the employee of choice for her for so many years.
You must have seen a lot throughout your time at M&B, what has been the biggest change during this time and how do you feel we are better positioned today as an organisation?
The biggest change has definitely been seeing more equality for all employees, regardless of gender, race, age – you name it. There is a completely different culture today than when I first entered the world of work at 16!
Congratulations on your service award – 50 years, how has M&B changed over that time as an employer?
Senior Management are so much more approachable and friendly. The culture and values of M&B are focused on togetherness and all being part of one team, and you really do feel that working here. There is also more focus on the well-being and health of employees.
What has kept you loyal and working for M&B throughout this time and your various life stages – you have grown up with us!
M&B was always known as the best employer in Smethwick, so it was an easy decision to make when I was offered a job at both M&B and GKN. I am so pleased to say that I made the right choice, for me leaving has never really been an option, I have never wanted to.
Moving around the various departments e.g. Finance, HR, Pensions, Bass Beers Worldwide, and Property has made a big difference and given me a varied career whilst remaining with the same company. I will always appreciate the opportunities M&B has given me to learn and develop, both in my career and for me as a person.
It also helped that benefits such as the pension scheme gave me the security of being financially OK when the time comes!
What has been your own career highlight?
I cannot choose just one, it would be impossible! I remember working for Bass Beers Worldwide when I exported Bass Pale Ale and Hooch around the world and Milk Stout to St Kitts, and other Caribbean Islands, that was an achievement! I loved my time working in operations with our Scream brand at the time for both Susan Martindale and David Blackhurst - it was hard work, but so much fun. Finally, the Property Department where I work now, gave me so many opportunities and has allowed me to develop my confidence at work. I still thoroughly enjoy coming to work and the company of all my colleagues. The Building Maintenance Controllers & Direct Area Repair Technician ladies definitely keep me feeling younger than my actual age!
What do you value most about your time with M&B?
Definitely the fun I have had and all the friends I have made past and present. Plus, the Christmas parties and our legendary 33% employee discount. I love going to the George, Warley every Friday after work for something to eat and drink.
What is your advice for a successful career?
Love what you do and always remain true to yourself and others.
Have confidence – you are capable of anything.
Always treat people as you wish to be treated.
Dedicated and loyal team members like Lynn are what make us who we are and who we must thank for our continued success.
