How Jack’s Down's Syndrome hasn’t held him back at M&B
At Mitchells and Butlers (M&B) we provide opportunities for anyone who is willing to work hard, have fun, and show their passion. We embrace the individuality of our people, because its the rich diversity within our teams that makes M&B strong.
Jack has been with M&B for almost 6 years and has made a real impact working in our team. He has Down's Syndrome, which is a common chromosomal condition that can cause different levels of learning disabilities, but this doesn’t hold him back and Jack’s since become an invaluable member of our family. Read his story here:
‘I love seeing my friends at work and I like the routine’
When we asked Jack why he chose to join M&B, and what he enjoys most about his job, he told us that it all comes down to the people who he works with and knowing that his day has structure. Following in his Auntie’s footsteps, he wanted the chance to gain some work experience and learn some life skills and now he loves the routine of coming to work and seeing his friends.
Making friends with your teammates at M&B is common because we try to encourage a friendly and buzzing atmosphere, which has led to a sense of camaraderie that is unrivalled in any other industry.
What it’s like to work at M&B with a disability
We asked Jack why he thought M&B is a great place for people with a disability to work. He said that we have ‘a nice, friendly environment, with supportive team members where I can have a good time.’ This is great to hear, and exactly the culture we strive to promote.
Tom, who works as a Team Leader at the Anderton Arms, also spoke to us recently about his career journey and working at M&B with a disability. He has Asperger’s syndrome and moderate learning disabilities, which means it takes him slightly longer to process things. But just like Jack, this hasn’t stopped his ambition to have a successful career. Our Apprenticeship programme, alongside his own dedication and hard work, helped Tom to build confidence and drive his kitchen career forward.
Continuous support from the team and managers
Jack told us that his team and managers give him continuous support at work, which has really helped him progress. ‘They understand my need for routine and working with the same person. They also know I need help sometimes and they make sure I'm safe.’
We see our people at their best because we promote a secure and positive work culture. It may sound cliché, but our teams really are like a family at M&B. We go through so much together on busy shifts, so we’ll always look out for each other.
We also asked Jack if he would recommend a job at M&B to someone with a disability. He said, ‘I would recommend M&B as I have worked there for nearly 6 years and I have learned a lot and had a lot of support.’ We love to help all of our team members with their learning and development, and showing support is a trait that comes naturally at M&B.
