Shane explains the benefits of a live in General Manager job in London
Shane has been a part of the M&B family for some time now. So we wanted to catch up with him to learn more about the benefits of a live in job, living in central London, and how he’s been supported to develop his career and become a General Manager at M&B .
Read on to find out more about his experience working at The Queens Arms Castle pub in Kensington and how you can apply for a live in job with us.
When did you join M&B, and why?
“I joined M&B five years ago while I was in my last year at university. I really loved my local pub and knew a few of the team already there, so I decided to join the team while finishing my studies.”
Maybe intro this bit with something like: Shane isn’t the only member of the team to have kicked off his career whilst at uni. Here are eight reasons why a pub job is the best uni job .
What do you enjoy most about your job at M&B?
“For me, it’s all about the people we work with. My team are my family, and the relationships you build are just phenomenal. My best friends are all other managers, and this isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle where we are all in it together.”
Did you know that three in five people say that having a work bestie makes their job more enjoyable ?
What are the best things about the live in benefit in general?
"Not paying rent is a huge benefit! How many people can say they live in a three-bedroom flat in Kensington rent free? Also, not travelling to work saves me buckets of time which I can spend with my family and workmates."
What are the best things about the live in benefit at your business?
“Hyde Park is just around the corner, and my pub is down the road from the Royal Albert Hall. Also, scenes from the film Layer Cake were filmed in and around my business… how cool is that?!”
How has M&B encouraged you to develop?
“Five years ago, I had a part-time job as a bartender with no hospitality experience whatsoever. I was super lucky; I had some amazing managers and area managers. We are blessed at M&B to have people who really invest in people and recognise their potential. I've grown hugely as a person in the last five years.”
At M&B, we believe in developing people like Shane who are passionate about their career. One way we love to invest in our people is through our apprenticeships. Our apprenticeships are created for people who want to build a career for themselves in hospitality. Interested in knowing more? We caught up with Deborah who shares why a management apprenticeship is a great career move .
What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work?
“I love spending time with my dog, playing Xbox with other managers in my district, and also playing 5-a-side.”
What would you say to somebody considering relocating to a site with live in benefits?
“Why are you still considering? Take the opportunity, embrace it and enjoy it!”
If you were stranded on a desert island, what is the one ingredient you'd take with you and why?
“Pea shoots. It doesn't matter what you’re eating, put some pea shoots on top, and everything looks instantly edible.”
We just hope for Shane’s sake that this never happens to him!
