How to get a bar job with no experience
So, you want to get a bar job but have no experience? No worries! Everyone has to start somewhere, and getting your foot in the door of the bustling bar industry is easier than you might think.
With the right mindset, a bit of preparation, and some tips, you'll be pouring pints and mixing cocktails in no time. Let's break it down and get you ready for your first bar job!
1. Show your enthusiasm
First things first, mindset is everything. Bar Managers are always on the lookout for people who are eager, enthusiastic, and willing to learn.
When you’re applying for a bar job, let your passion for the role shine through. Whether it's in your CV, during an interview, or in a casual chat with the bar staff, make sure they know you're excited about the opportunity.
Mention how much you enjoy social atmospheres, meeting new people, and the idea of mastering the art of mixology.
2. Get the basics down
Even if you don’t have formal experience, there are some basics you can pick up on your own.
Learn the names of common drinks, understand basic bar etiquette, and familiarise yourself with the tools of the trade.
There are plenty of online resources, tutorials, and videos that can give you a head start.
Showing that you’ve taken the initiative to learn a bit on your own can impress potential employers and demonstrate your commitment.
3. Highlight transferable skills
You might not have bar experience, but you probably have skills that are highly valuable in a bar setting.
Have you worked in retail? Great, you know customer service. Ever had a job in a fast-paced environment? Perfect, bars are busy places. Worked on a team project in school or college? Amazing, as you’ll work in a team to keep our guests happy at M&B.
Mention any experience that showcases your ability to handle pressure, work as part of a team, or provide excellent service. These transferable skills are gold when it comes to landing a bar job.
4. Make friends and connections
Networking in the hospitality industry is all about having fun and making friends.
If you know someone who works in a bar, ask them to put in a good word for you. Drop by local bars, introduce yourself and chat with the staff.
Building friendships with people in the industry can open doors to opportunities you might not find through traditional job searches. Working with friends makes the job even more enjoyable!
5. Be prepared to start small
You might not land your dream bar job right away, and that’s okay. Be open to starting with roles that will get you in the door. These positions will help you learn the ropes, prove your work ethic, and eventually move up to a bartender role.
One way to get your foot in the door is with our Bar and Waiting Apprenticeship. You don't even need any experience. Apprenticeships give you the skills you need to succeed and - even better - you’ll even have fun along the way!
So long as you can provide a warm, helpful manner to everyone you meet, we can teach you the ins and outs of working as part of our busy teams.
By taking on a full-time role as a Bar and Waiting Apprentice under the supervision of our passionate teams, not only will you achieve a Level 2 Hospitality Team Member Apprenticeship, but you will also be able to support the running of our businesses, creating some amazing moments! Hear from one of our Bar and Waiting apprentices.
