4 ways Kitchen Managers can handle the heat in the kitchen

Working in a kitchen is varied, exciting and keeps you on your toes. Don’t get us wrong, it is a busy environment, but with the right systems and processes put in place by managers, teams can feel on top of everything.

It’s down to a Kitchen Manager to keep things running smoothly. This means motivating the team, keeping an eye on orders, and everything else in between. To be a great Kitchen Manager, you’ll need to have a variety of skills so you can spin lots of plates at any one time. We’ve got plenty of kitchen career opportunities available, so here are a few tips to help make your application stand out.

Be super organised

Being organised is a good skill to have in any job, but in kitchen management it is key. There are many things all happening at once, so in order to operate a safe and functioning kitchen, planning ahead and being prepared is a must. You’ll be responsible for ensuring working environments are clean, stock levels are maintained, and shifts are scheduled in, amongst other tasks, and these are all things that can’t be left to the last minute!

Be a confident leader

A key ingredient to success is having the confidence to motivate a team and give them direction. Your team will look to you for guidance, so helping them to train, grow, and develop under your leadership is important. By encouraging a good working atmosphere and team culture, you’ll be able to get the most out of your team and hit those targets. Leading people is all about working with a team, not dictating to them!

Keep a cool head under pressure

If you’ve worked in a kitchen before, you’ll know it’s about as fast-paced as it gets, and to be a Kitchen Manager you need to be prepared to make a lot of decisions under pressure. Step into any kitchen and you’ll find a team of chefs, all with lots on their plate, so being a seasoned pro in staying calm and being firm but fair with your team will make the kitchen a much more efficient and friendly place to work.

Have a keen eye for details

As Kitchen Manager, you’ll be familiar with multitasking, but you’ll also need an eye for detail so you can spot the little things sooner to avoid a bigger problem later. This might relate to anything and everything involving financial performance, health and safety, food preparation and hygiene, customer orders, the kitchen team and more.

Can you handle the heat?

There are a lot of myths about working in a kitchen , but at Mitchells and Butlers, our teams get the job done whilst developing their careers and making friends for life. The hours can sometimes be long but working in a kitchen is incredibly rewarding and a great experience, especially in the lead up to Christmas.

Being a Kitchen Manager is a mighty important job, so, if you can handle the heat, we want to hear from you. Browse our available kitchen jobs today and see what kind of career you can whip up with us.
