Are you passionate about leading teams and keen to climb up the ranks? We’ve got just the position for you at Mitchells and Butlers. As a Deputy Manager, you'll wear many hats - you're key to guest experience, training your team and supporting your General Manager with the smooth running of the business.
Read on to discover what a deputy manager does on a day-to-day basis, the skills and experience needed to be the best, and what kind of work environment you will enjoy.
Deputy Manager roles and responsibilities
Let's take a closer look at the key responsibilities of a Deputy Manager at M&B, making sure our shifts run smoothly and our guests have a great time!
- People - it's all about the team – coaching them to deliver exceptional service every time. You'll make sure everyone’s in the right place at the right time, setting them up for success with engaging shift briefs, ongoing training, and supportive coaching.
- Practice - from kicking off the day with smooth opening routines to closing up shop, you'll ensure everything runs like clockwork. You'll make sure the place looks spick and span, maintain health and safety standards, and take care of everything from the front of the house to the cellar.
- Profit - stay on top of cash, security, and stock like a pro. You'll keep wastage low and profits high by sticking to brand standards and recording everything properly. Plus, you'll motivate the team to upsell and boost revenue.
- Guest - teamwork makes the dream work – you'll collaborate with the kitchen crew to keep things running smoothly. By listening to guest feedback, you’ll continuously enhance the experience, ensuring our food and service always hit the mark.
Deputy Manager skills
Here are some key skills you'll need as a Deputy Manager and how you can use them to really make a difference:
- Strategic thinking - share the big picture and gather the right info to make smart decisions that benefit our business and wow our guests.
- Goal setting and coaching - set clear goals, give helpful feedback, and coach your team to be their best.
- Innovation and adaptability - embrace change, find ways to improve, and adapt to keep things fresh and exciting.
- Team collaboration - work together, appreciate everyone's strengths, and use feedback to make a positive impact.
- People development - help your team grow by encouraging a positive mindset, learning from experiences, and sharing insights for success.
If you don’t have all these skills yet, that is not a problem! We’re all about developing your skills on the job through ongoing training. We believe that personality, work ethic, and a genuine passion for hospitality are the most important qualities for a Deputy Manager.
Deputy Manager experience
Whether you're jumping over from another industry, have management experience already or climbing the ladder within M&B, our training programs are here to give you all the skills and know-how you need.
You'll be reporting to the general manager, and they will be there every step of the way, providing training and support to help you shine in your role.
We believe in growing our own talent. In fact, only last year, we promoted over 150 Assistant Managers to General Managers. With dedication and hard work, you can carve your own path at M&B, starting as an Assistant Manager and progressing to Deputy Manager and then General Manager.
