What does an Area Manager at Mitchells & Butlers do?
So you're thinking about applying for a Retail Business Manager (RBM) role, but you want to know more about the day-to-day responsibilities? We can help you out there. An RBM's role is to lead, inspire and coach General Managers and their retail teams. Your end goal is to create the best possible guest experience, maximising sales and profit opportunities within your district.
Essentially, as the area manager, it's your job to make sure that your teams bring their ‘A’ game when it comes to food, drink and service quality. A lot of responsibility comes with the role, so if you're passionate about progressing your hospitality career, step right up!
The responsibilities
Speaking of responsibilities, we break them down into four categories: people, guests, practices and profits.
People
An RBM must be flexible in their management style, allowing some teams to self-manage whilst providing more direct help to others. That being said, there are a few responsibilities that you'll carry out across all teams:
-
Provide coaching and feedback to develop ambitious General Managers and their retail teams
-
Develop a talent plan that provides a quality pipeline of employees at all levels
-
Foster a culture of engagement within the district and brand, encouraging decision making on the front line
Guests
It's not just about getting guests through the doors. At M&B, we're all about creating memorable experiences for our guests. You'll help to create a welcoming environment, where people are always looking forward to their next visit by:
-
Personally seeking direct guest feedback
-
Keeping an eye on food and drink quality within your district, taking action where required to maintain and improve standards
-
Visiting competitors and sharing knowledge about their guest experience to highlight areas of improvement
Practices
Our area managers believe in sharing the bigger picture to inspire and empower their teams. You'll lead from the front by:
-
Embodying brand values and standards in everything that you do
-
Overseeing the successful implementation of all new systems and menu launches within your district
-
Taking pride in the overall condition of your restaurant's and pub's facilities
Profits
Keeping an eye on the bottom line is the final core responsibility for all RBMs. It's down to you to:
-
Monitor the performance of all restaurants and pubs in your area and pinpoint how you can increase sales and grow profitability
-
Ensure that every business has the right number of team members
-
Review all key performance indicators with your managers and agree on priorities
Who do you report to?
We've covered what's expected of you as an RBM at Mitchells & Butlers, but who will be there to help you achieve your goals? Whichever brand you work for – and there are 13 to choose from – you’ll report to the Operations Director.
Reporting to a director will give a unique view into how our businesses work. Knowing what's going on at all levels will help you connect the dots and make the right decisions for your region. Operating in a culture where empowered responsibility and accountability are at the heart of decision making, your manager will give you just the right level of support.
Are you an inspiring leader ready to take on your next management role?
If you've been working in hospitality for some time now, you'll know first-hand that it can be one of the most fun, rewarding and challenging industries to work in. But if you know that there's no other industry that you'd rather work in, then you might just fit in perfectly at M&B.
We believe that the key to a successful business is finding people who love what they do. Through your passion, experience and leadership, you’ll inspire your teams to grow and develop, serve up great guest experiences and smash targets each and every day. We have a limited number of area manager roles, so get your application started and don't miss out!
